Abstract   It was postulated that remnant stomach cancer(primary carcinoma of stomach after gastric operation for benign gastrodulodenal disease) had higher incidence than general population. But the arguments of etiology, direct relationship between gastric aperation and remnant stomach cancer, and the incidence of remnant cancer comparing with that of general poplation are not completed. We reviewed thirteen cases of remnant stomach cancer that occurred over 5 years after gastric surgery for benign gastroduodenal disease from Jan. 1980 to Dec. 1991. The mean interval between the first operation and the development of cancer was 19.3 years(rang- es from 5 to 35 years). Twelve of them received partial gastrectomy and Billroth II reconstruction as their first operations. Only one patient received gastrojejunostomy without resection. The original diseases were 5 cases of benign ulcer of stomach, 5 cases of duodenal ulcer and undetermined 3 cases. Treatment of the remnant stomach cancer was curative resection in 9 cases. The others received only palliative therapy. The operative finding revealed stage I gastric cancer in three cases, stage III in 5 cases and stage IV in 4 cases. Histologically the intestinal type was 2 cases and the diffuse type was 7 cases in Laurens classification(the others could not be comfirmed). With the great concern to this entity of disease, the prognosis of the remnant stomach cancer would be improved by early detection of cancer.
